Once a small fishing port, Biarritz became renowned in 1854 when Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon the Third, built a palace on the main beach. The palace is now knowed as the Hôtel du Palais. Then, all european royalties started to took vacations in Biarritz making the city one of the most poshed in Europe...

The birthplace of surfing in Europe

In 1957, the famous movie producer Peter Viertel came in vacation in the area. He introduced the youth of Biarritz to his surfboards... Madness ensued!
